Provençal village
Éguilles
The hilltop village with panoramic views.
Perched three hundred metres above the Arc plain, Éguilles watches over the Aix countryside. Curled around its château, this Provençal village unfurls its stone lanes amid olive groves, vineyards and wooded hills.
Its history is written in stone — Celto-Ligurian oppida on the heights, the seigneurial residence of the Boyer d’Éguilles family towering over the town, wash houses and fountains tucked away in the narrow lanes.
From the château esplanade, the view takes in the whole valley as far as the Étang de Berre. It is one of the finest viewpoints in the Pays d’Aix, where sunsets seem to linger forever.
Here, life follows the rhythm of the Provençal seasons — orchards in blossom in spring, silvery olive trees under the summer sun, golden grape harvests in autumn. Éguilles invites you to rise above it all and savour Provence in peace.

Le Château des Boyer d’Éguilles
At the top of the village, the château’s four storeys tower over the plain. It was built around 1659 for the Boyer d’Éguilles family by the architect Pierre Pavillon, on the ruins of a residence destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Its façades and roofs are listed as Historic Monuments. Today the building houses the town hall, but it is its esplanade that captivates: from here, the view plunges across the Aix countryside as far as the Étang de Berre. The church of Saint-Julien stands against it, its bell tower born of an old square tower of the château.
The old village and its wash houses
Clinging to the western flank of the château, the old village unfurls its steep, narrow and winding lanes. You climb by way of steps and passageways, between stone houses weathered by time. Old wash houses and a few fountains punctuate the way, relics of the daily life of yesteryear. Round the corner of an alley, the landscape suddenly opens onto the valley. It is a peaceful maze, best explored without a map, from one shaded square to the next.

TO DO

Walking around Éguilles
From the old village, a waymarked trail of some ten kilometres loops around the commune. Allow about two and a half hours; it is well within reach of the whole family. The path crosses olive groves, skirts the forest of the Saint Martin estate, then winds back down through the plain and the vineyards. Along the way, the wooded Fontlaure estate offers a cool pause, in the heart of a protected area. One viewpoint follows another, opening wide onto the Pays d’Aix countryside.

Discovering the Jardin d’Éguilles
Hidden in the heart of the village, the Jardin d’Éguilles is the work of the artist Max Sauze. Open to the public since 1989, it blends sculpture, Mediterranean planting and singular compositions. The French Ministry of Culture has awarded it the “Jardin remarquable” label. Visitors wander from one exhibition to the next, in a timeless atmosphere. It is best to check opening days before you go.

Catching the view at sunset
The château esplanade, perched three hundred metres up, looks out over the entire plain. The eye travels towards the Arc valley and, on a clear day, as far as the Étang de Berre. At the end of the day, the light gilds the rooftops and the surrounding hills. This is when Éguilles is at its most beautiful, in the calm of the evening. A few benches invite you to linger, unhurried.
